One Ear Forward, One Ear Back
Look at the signal, then look at the whole horse and the situation around it.
NOTICE
One ear points forward while the other points backward or toward a different direction.
WHAT IT MAY TELL YOU
Your horse may be monitoring more than one direction or shifting attention between different sounds, people, horses, or events.
DON'T ASSUME
One ear back is not the same as ears pinned tightly backward. An uneven ear position also doesn't automatically mean confusion, worry, or a particular emotion.
LOOK AGAIN
Where is each ear pointing? Where are the eyes and head directed? What is happening in front of, beside, and behind the horse?

What research shows
Horses can orient their ears in different directions. Studies have used asymmetric ear positions as one clue that attention may be divided or shifting between different targets.
What it does not tell us
An uneven ear position does not by itself prove confusion, anxiety, or a particular emotional state.
