More Eye White Showing
Look at the signal, then look at the whole horse and the situation around it.
NOTICE
More of the white part of the eye—the sclera—is visible than is usual for that horse.
You may see more white above, below, or around the colored part of the eye.
WHAT IT MAY TELL YOU
More visible eye white can appear when the horse moves the eye, opens it wider, or looks strongly toward something.
It may come with increased attention or arousal, but the meaning depends on the horse and what is happening around them.
DON'T ASSUME
More eye white doesn't automatically mean the horse is terrified, panicking, or angry.
Some horses naturally show more sclera than others, so ask: “Is this different from what is normal for this horse?”
LOOK AGAIN
Look at what the horse is focusing on. Are the eyes also wider than usual? Is the head or neck raised? Is the body tense or ready to move?
If you can, compare both eyes and notice whether the extra white changes when the horse shifts attention.

What research suggests
EquiFACS codes increased visible sclera separately from increased eye opening. More eye white can result from movement of the eyeball as well as changes in eyelid opening.
What that does not mean
Visible eye white alone cannot identify fear or any other single emotion, and normal baseline visibility differs between horses.
