Wide, Alert Eyes
Look at the signal, then look at the whole horse and the situation around it.
NOTICE
The eyes look more open than usual.
You may notice:
- The upper eyelid lifted
- A larger-looking eye opening
- A more alert expression
- The horse strongly focusing on something nearby
WHAT IT MAY TELL YOU
Wider eyes often show up when attention or arousal increases.
The horse may be watching something closely, surprised, uncertain, excited, or alarmed. What happens next helps tell you more.
DON'T ASSUME
Wide eyes don't automatically mean the horse is frightened, panicking, or about to spook.
Instead, ask: “What has caught the horse's attention, and what is the rest of the body doing?”
LOOK AGAIN
Notice where the ears and head are directed. Is the neck raised? Is the body soft or braced? Has the breathing changed? Does the horse investigate, settle, move away, or stay intensely focused?
Also notice whether the eye is simply more open or whether more white of the eye is showing. Those are related observations, but they are not the same thing.

What research suggests
EquiFACS treats increased eye opening as a specific facial action caused by raising the upper eyelid. It can occur when attention or arousal increases.
What that does not mean
A wider eye opening does not point to one specific emotion. It should also be distinguished from increased visible eye white, which can happen for different reasons.
