Wide, Alert Eyes
Look at the signal, then look at the whole horse and the situation around it.
NOTICE
The eyes look more open than usual.
You may notice:
- The upper eyelid raised
- A larger-looking eye opening
- A more alert facial expression
- The horse strongly orienting toward something
WHAT IT MAY TELL YOU
Wider eyes can appear when attention or arousal increases.
The horse may be watching something closely, surprised, highly alert, uncertain, excited, or alarmed.
DON'T ASSUME
Wide eyes do not automatically mean:
- “My horse is afraid.”
- “My horse is panicking.”
- “My horse is about to spook.”
Instead, ask: “What has captured the horse’s attention, and what is the rest of the body doing?”
LOOK AGAIN
Check where the ears and head are directed. Is the neck raised? Is the body soft or braced? Has breathing changed? Does the horse investigate, relax, move away, or stay intensely focused?
Also notice whether the eye is simply more open or whether more white of the eye is showing. Those are related but separate observations.

What research shows
EquiFACS treats increased eye opening as a specific facial action caused by raising the upper eyelid. This can occur with heightened attention or arousal.
What it does not tell us
A wider eye opening does not identify one emotion. It should also be distinguished from increased visible sclera, which can happen for different reasons.
